How to make the transition to natural food in puppies?

When we consider changing our dogs’ food, it is normal that we have doubts, especially if we have just acquired a puppy for the first time and we do not know how to make the transition to natural food.

In this blog, we provide you with tools and options to make this change in a correct way, taking into account what each puppy needs, focusing on the requirements of its first vital stage.

What should a puppy eat?

Dogs are facultative carnivores, this means that their digestive system is designed to digest meat, as the stomach pH of dogs is usually very acidic in order to eliminate bacteria and parasites that could be contained in the organisms of the prey they hunted in ancient times. By offering a natural diet that is as physiological as possible and that respects their nature, you will promote the maintenance of an acidic pH.

How transition to natural food should be made?

We must take into account, above all, the state of health and the current diet. Let us also remember that puppies need to eat in several feedings, so we will respect the recommended number of feedings and pay special attention to their transition.

Classic transition

As an example, we will explain how to make a transition in puppies with 3 feedings:

Days 1, 2 and 3

Feed 3/4 of the manufacturer’s recommended feeding rate, and 1/4 of the new natural food.

Days 4, 5 and 6

Feed 1/2  of the manufacturer’s recommended feeding rate, plus 1/2 of the new natural food.

Days 7, 8 and 9

Feed 1/4 of the manufacturer’s recommended feeding rate, and 3/4 of the new natural food.

From this day on, and if all has gone well, you will be able to start eating Bon Appetreat at all your feedings.

We recommend offering probiotics during the transition to adapt the digestive system to the new diet. We can use kefir, preferably goat or sheep, offering 1 teaspoon for every 5 kg of the dog per day. Or other probiotics in capsule form.  Then we can continue to offer this supplement whenever we want.
