How do we supplement your menus with fruits and vegetables?

There are many concerns about the ingredients and supplements that we can add in the diets of our dogs. And there are many fruits and vegetables that we can include and that have multiple benefits for our 4-legged kids.

In this blog we are going to provide ideas of fruits and vegetables that we can add in our dogs’ diets. However, we would like to remind you that Bon Appetreat menus are already designed based on these fruits and vegetables, in addition to carrying meat.

Fresh fruits and vegetables provide many nutrients and benefits for dogs. They also contain an optimal amount of soluble fiber, and are rich in vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids; in addition to having antioxidant and anti-aging properties. In fact, some of the ingredients they provide are essential for the proper functioning of our furry friend’s organism.

But, can dogs consume carbohydrates? As a general rule, dogs do not usually digest them well, since their physiology does not change due to the fact that for decades we have been feeding them with processed feed.

We must take into account that our furry dog does not digest well if we include cereals in his diet. In particular, they do not digest well some carbohydrates: corn, wheat, white rice, quinoa, among others.

However, fruits and vegetables are simple and easily absorbed carbohydrates, therefore, adding a small portion of fruits and vegetables in their diet will help us to provide extra nutrients necessary for our dog’s organism.

The dog’s ancestor, the wolf, used to include in its diet a small portion of fruits and vegetables naturally present in it, so for that reason it is important to include them as well.

Which fruits are the most beneficial?

Strawberries: Strawberries are ideal for those dogs with some extra kilos, since they have a very low amount of calories. They are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, fiber and folic acid.

Blueberries: they add a lot of flavor to their meals, and are ideal to prevent urinary infections, cystitis and the formation of kidney stones/calculi in our furry dogs. They are antioxidants, and help reduce the risk of heart disease. They also favor the digestive tract, providing fiber.

Melon and watermelon: they are two fruits rich in fiber and contain almost 100% water. They are highly recommended for summer time and can be offered as a snack to overweight dogs.

What are the vegetables with the greatest benefits?

Carrot: we include this vegetable in our menus because it contains a large number of vitamins (B, C, D, E and K) and is a great ally for eye health. Biting the carrot fiber helps the dog’s oral health, since it reduces the amount of tartar accumulated on teeth and gums.

Broccoli: the different vitamins it contains (C, A, E and K) provide benefits to your dog’s body, such as bone strengthening and healing properties. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant, improves digestion and helps fight anemia thanks to its high iron content.

Zucchini: it is one of the vegetables that best preserves its properties. It is rich in potassium, has calcium and has a high vitamin A content. It helps to have a good renal and cardiac health and strengthens your bones.

Cabbage and cauliflower: can be ideal for intestinal problems. They can also have a great anti-inflammatory effect for joint problems.

At Bon Appetreat we always recommend grinding or mashing fruits and vegetables to facilitate the digestion of our dogs and the absorption of nutrients from them. Likewise, we also recommend cooking them at low temperature, as we do with our menus, so that they keep all their properties and nutrients.

What are the vegetables with the greatest benefits?

As we have already mentioned, dogs have a low carbohydrate requirement, so we recommend not to administer more than 5% of their daily food ration. Fruits and vegetables should be washed very well, just as if we were going to consume them ourselves, since most of them have insecticides and chemical sprays that are best avoided.

For any doubt regarding the supply of fruits and vegetables in the menus of our furry friends, the nutritionist team of Bon Appetreat is at your disposal.
